BUSES

There are two types of buses in Hong Kong, single and double-deck buses and small 16 passenger mini-buses. Most buses are air-conditioned. Each travels set routes; prices vary by distance.

You pay on boarding and drivers give NO CHANGE, but you can over-pay. On Hong Kong Island a main terminal is at the street level of Exchange Square, not far from the Star Ferry.  Board there or at regular bus stops that are posted with small, circular blue or yellow signs on Hong Kong Island, and red in Kowloon. Bus prices are posted next to the driver.

* Hours of operation are 0600 to 2400

MINI-BUSES

Mini-buses do not stop at regular bus stops. Flag them to get on. If English does not work, "Hi Knee Dough Teng" is Cantonese to say "stop here."

MTR (MASS TRANSIT RAILWAY)

The train is the fastest transportation for getting around Hong Kong. (See our insert map.) Much of the system is underground. For entrances, look for an over/under mirror image "M".

The MTR is easy to use and cheap. All stations have maps. A Customer Service Centre in each station provides change and sells stored-value tickets. Or buy tickets from a booth or one-way ticket machine. Feed the ticket into the turnstile; retrieve it when you go through. On leaving the station, feed the ticket into another turnstile to exit. The MTR air-conditioned trains run every few minutes from 0600 to 0100.

KCR (KOWLOON-CANTON RAILROAD)

Air-conditioned trains run from Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon to Fanling/Taipo. They stop at Shatin Racecourse on racing days. Fares vary by destination. MTR tickets can be used on the KCR. MTR and KCR are in the process of merging. Trains run every ten minutes from 0535 to 2400.
