LAN KWAI FONG AND SOHO NIGHTLIFE

Street cafe
The bars of Hong Kong which employ hostesses are called "girlie bars." These bars post an employee at the street entrance to entice patrons to enter. A bar hostess will join a customer and is paid in the form of drinks, about one every fifteen minutes.
By law, all bars must display a price list, but few patrons check them. In some disreputable places, as you become more relaxed, the prices rise. Some bars have live music but most have jukeboxes. Chips and peanuts MAY NOT BE FREE and can cost HK$30 a bowl, even if you don’t eat them.
Many bars have 10 to 15 girls who have a huge capacity for 'Hong Kong Tea' or other drinks like Coke, 7-Up or ginger ale. They share the take from their customers at the end of the night.
Topless bars are rapidly disappearing although you may still find one or two in Tsim Sha Tsui or Wanchai. A topless bar evening can cost at least US$100 and if you are not careful it could cost three to four times that amount. Pay for drinks immediately. Don't settle bills later. Use of credit cards is dangerous. Hostess drinks cost HK$100 each but you don't have to buy the girl a drink!
Karaoke bars are popular with locals and Japanese tourists. Most of the music played is Cantonese. If you feel adventurous, give it a try but foreigners may not be welcomed. If you are, they'll play English-language videos for you.
Ballrooms are expensive, charging about HK$100 to dance for 15 minutes, or the same amount to sit out the dance. They are not suitable for foreign tourists. Few of the girls speak English.
Except for those in big hotels, where you bring your own date, there are discotheques that have girls who'll dance with you - at no charge, but you have to buy them drinks. Prices are even higher than in girlie bars.
