More than 10 percent of Hong Kong's population is Christian. The number has grown in recent years with the addition of more than 200,000 Filipino household servants. Since no facility large enough to accommodate them in their leisure time has been set up, you can see sitting in groups all around Central District on Sundays and holidays. Victoria Park is where many Indonesian and Thai domestics congregate. The majority of Hong Kong's population is Buddhist. Muslims and Taoists represent a small percentage. A recent survey indicated that Hong Kong people are the least religious in the world but when disasters occur, they are among the most generous. Fifty years ago masses of Chinese refugees flooded into Hong Kong. Most churches served the refugees. Education and housing were priorities. A bargain was struck between churches and the government, which gave them land for schools and eighty percent of the school building costs as well as paying teacher salaries. The churches were permitted to use the school auditoriums for worship. Many churches still meet in school halls and there are more students in church-operated鈥噑chools than in government. |
