Embroidery and linens are good buys but best appreciated by those who do embroidery. Rattan handbags for ladies, wigs, leather and canvas purses, embroidered silk cigarette or eyeglass cases, tiny charms for charm bracelets and perfume are good gift ideas.
US MILITARY POST OFFICE
The US Military Post Office (FPO AP 96522) is at Fenwick Pier. It serves all authorized users. Your military identification card is required to receive postal service. Retirees are limited to one pound.
Operating hours: 1000 to 1600 Monday through Friday while no ships are in port. When ships are in, the FPO may be open on Sunday, depending on port loading. Only US currency is used. US Postal Money Orders are sold and cashed at the FPO.
Pack and wrap services are available on the ground floor of Fenwick Pier while ships are in port 1000 to 1800. All mail is dispatched daily.
Mail for visiting ships is delivered on the ship's arrival. No official registered mail with the exception of urinalysis mailed to CO., NAVDRUGSCRLAB, Postal Money Order reports and Navy wide exam material, will be accepted or delivered by FPO.
HK Post Office is on Hennessy Road near Arsenal Street; behind Connaught Centre, Hong Kong Island; and Middle Road, near the Sheraton Hotel in Kowloon.
The official exchange rate is HK$7.8 for every one US dollar, but since the rate is never exactly 7.8 anyway, just remember that a HK$100 bill is worth US$13 and a HK$10 coin is worth about US$1.30. Or think of it another way: one US dollar is worth about HK$7.
Caution: Know the exchange rate and don't change money anywhere that charges a high commission. Sometimes signs say no commission on buying currency. The trick is that high commissions are charged on selling you currency, or the other way around. Be sure to ask before you pass your money over the counter. The ground floor money exchange at Fenwick Pier is fair and safe.
Lockers are FREE if you bring your own lock, otherwise $4.00
In Hong Kong, a 10 percent service charge is usually added to every restaurant bill unless otherwise stated, so there's no need to figure out 10 or 15 percent of the bill to leave as a tip. Most restaurants do not turn over the service charge to their waiters. A couple of HK dollars is sufficient tip for a taxi ride.
Do not over tip. For satisfactory service, customers usually leave additional HK$5-$10.
