SPORTS AND RECREATION

Almost every sport is played in Hong Kong. Lights are on until 2300 at Southorn Playground, near Fenwick Pier. If you're a basketball, squash, handball or tennis player, you can also play until midnight at indoor sports centers.

A few local teams enjoy playing visiting teams and can provide a friendly challenge. Don't be surprised if you lose! Some sports like golf are very expensive to play. Get sports activity advice at the Information Booth.

BASKETBALL

Chinese University and the Hong Kong International School sometimes play US Navy teams. You can play in any public parks if you bring a ball. Local players welcome visiting sailors in pick-up games. Don't be shy. Nearby courts at Southorn Playground, in Wanchai, are FREE, if available, as are those in Victoria Park.

BEACHES

If a beach is gazetted, i.e. listed as a government controlled beach in the official government gazette, it is cared for by lifeguards and has free changing rooms, showers and toilet facilities. They usually have shark nets. These beaches are regularly cleaned by patrols of workers. Some beaches are stony and a bit uncomfortable to walk on; others have fine sand which was shipped in by barge.

Forty sand beaches have been developed, mostly on Hong Kong Island and in the New Territories.  In summer, beaches are packed on weekends, nearly empty on weekdays. You can reach most beaches in a half-hour bus ride from Fenwick Pier.

The outlying islands of Hong Kong have nice beaches that can be reached by inexpensive ferry rides from the Outlying Districts Ferry Pier on the waterfront, not far from the Star Ferry on Hong Kong Island.

Two of the best-known beaches in Hong Kong are Repulse Bay and Deep Water Bay on the southern side of Hong Kong Island. You can rent water skis at Deep Water Bay. Other beaches on Hong Kong Island are Stanley, Shek-O and Big Wave Bay.

Lamma, Cheung Chau and Lantau islands have good beaches and regular ferry service.  Each year there are several shark attacks. Obey the SHARK WARNING signs at the beaches.

BOWLING

Bowling is popular and new facilities are built each year. All have AMF or Brunswick equipment with fully automatic pinsetters, air-conditioning and complete equipment rental. Cost varies from HK$18 per lane during the day to HK$30.00 evenings and weekends.

CRICKET

Best left for spectators, cricket is popular in Hong Kong in spring and winter. The Hong Kong Cricket Club is on Wongneichong Gap Road on Hong Kong Island. There are stands around the field and spectators are welcome to watch free of charge.
