CITY HALL

City Hall is on Hong Kong Island, near the landfill at the center of the harbor, west of Fenwick Pier. Really a cultural center, it contains a restaurant, museum, library, theater and concert hall. Local theater groups perform here. There are foreign film festivals, talent shows, pop and folk concerts. Tickets cost HK$80 to HK$300 at the City Hall lobby box office which opens daily at noon. Tickets can be bought starting at HK$90 for Cantonese drama and opera. A marriage center is in the garden next to the City Hall. Behind the City Hall is an exhibition center showing future plans for Hong Kong.

 

 

CHINESE OPERA

To鈥嘩esterners,鈥嘋hinese Opera is a cacophony of booms, bangs clashes, squeaks, grunts and grimaces like nothing else anywhere.鈥嘢ince鈥噛ou鈥嘽an always leave at intermission if you don’t like it - try it!  The main instruments are gongs, drums, cymbals and Chinese stringed instruments鈥噒hat鈥噈imic鈥噒he falsetto human voice. Temple Street has shows nightly; for standees it is FREE.

 

HONG KONG MUSEUM OF COASTAL DEFENCE

Located in Shau Kei Wan, the museum is converted from Lei Yue Mun Fort that guards the mouth of Hong Kong harbor. It was intended to resist invasions of pirates and Western colonialists. It is an interesting way to spend the afternoon. Only a 15-minute walk from Exit B2 of Shau Kei Wan MTR station it is open 10:00am to 5:00pm daily, closed Thursdays. $10.00.
