In recent years Aberdeen has changed from a small fishing village into a thriving mini-city with many high-rise industrial buildings, residences and shopping centers. There used to be thousands of live-on sampans in the Aberdeen Harbor. Most of the fishing families have been relocated to high-rise apartments in the vicinity. Today the main attractions for tourists are the fishing boats and floating restaurants of Aberdeen.
Floating restaurants provide a unique dining experience. Take a FREE sampan to the restaurants, even if you don’t eat there. Tell your taxi driver to take you to the sampan piers. The Chinese style building overlooking the Aberdeen Harbor is the Catholic Seminary.
Because of the high density of residents on the south side of the island, the MTR will begin tunneling their railway into the area and open train stations by 2013.
Located on Des Voeux Road between Queen Victoria Street and Jubilee Street, Central Market is a typical Hong Kong fresh food market. Meat, poultry and fish are offered in great variety, as are fresh fruits and vegetables from all over the world. Many fish are sold live. Smells are strong and the floor of the market is always wet but it is worth taking a stroll through. At the Des Voeux Road side of the market you can ride an escalator for the longest free ride of its type in the world up to mid-levels.
Bird Garden is located at Yuen Po Street, just off Prince Edward Road West in Mong Kok. Open 7am-8pm daily. You will find many stalls with a large variety of birds for sale. There are several bird shops near Fenwick Pier off Johnston Road close to Southorn playground.
Along with tropical fish, the Chinese hold birds in high esteem. They receive special care, taken out every morning for a walk to get fresh air or to the teahouse for dim sum. Rarely will you see a woman carrying a birdcage. Raising a bird is symbolic of retirement and is usually a hobby of retired men who proudly take their birds along on hikes and in visits to public parks.
Often the birds are from the same province as the owner. They are hand-fed live grasshoppers or grubs, crushed egg yolk and special homemade food.
